Deadhead Fire Protection Refused Tiverton, a village without fire protection, near Fall River, Mass., had a serious fire on December 3, and sent to Fall River for apparatus, which Chief W. C. Davol declined to send. Tiverton then sent to Newport. R. I., and Chief Kirwin sent Engine No. 5 and a crew of firemen on a 12-mile run to that town, which arrived in time to render excellent service. A check for $100 has since been sent to Newport by Tiverton in payment for its service. Newport recently decided to refuse aid to Middletown, R. I., just as ball River refused aid to Tiverton, because Middletown never paid for service already rendered by the Newport department. Tiverton people are bitter in their criticism of Chief Davol because he had recently sent assistance to another town.
