Retirement of Chief Coots GENERAL NEWS FEATURES Reference was made last week to the resignation of Chief Charles E. Coots, of the Indianapolis, Ind., fire department, and the appointment of J. Harry Johnson as his successor. In reference to the change the Star of that city has this to say: A tribute to Mr. Coots as a fireman and as a citizen was paid by Charles A. Bookwalter, who appointed Coots chief of the department twelve years ago. Mr. Bookwalter said that Mr. Coots so literally had followed instructions to disregard politics in the department that he (Bookwalter) had been unable to favor some friends. Bookwalter said that he considered Coots an ideal public officer. Chief Coots retired voluntarily. He retains, however, a badge far more precious than the one he surrenders —the one you gave him, the good badge of honor. Chief Coots was presented a diamond stickpin purchased…
