New Chief at Philadelphia

New Chief at Philadelphia Battalion Chief William H. Murphy has been promoted to Chief of the Philadelphia fire department to succeed E. A. Waters. Battalion Chief Ross B. Davis has been made Deputy Chief to succeed Samuel Cook, who resigned last April, and Battalion Chief John J. Meskill, who has been Acting Chief since the retirement of Chief Waters, goes back to his former position. These promotions were made under civil service rules, the examination showing the following percentage obtained by the different chiefs: Murphy, 93.61; Meskill, 92.34; Geo. Nallinger, 84.51; Davis, 71.53; J. J. McQuaid, 70.95. Chief Murphy is forty years old, and has been in the department nineteen vears. Deputy Chief Davis is thirty-eight and has been in the department since 1895.
