Rates Highest With Volunteer Dept. At a public hearing on insurance underwriters methods held by a legislative investigating committee at York, Pa., last week, Louis Weiderhold, Jr., of Philadelphia, secretary of the Middle Department Underwriters’ Association, said that because York has a volunteer fire department, sixteen cents is added to every $100 of insurance carried. Mr. Weiderhold explained that while York has an excellent fire department, it is a volunteer department, and that experience shows that paid departments are better as a rule, and that as long as there is a volunteer department in York and other cities there will be a charge that cannot be removed, but this is only part of the sixteen cents.
