Assistant Chief William Code Retires After forty years of continuous service, Assistant Chief William Code, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, resigned on June 1, and was retired on a pension. He is 65 years of age. He has been in the thick of the fight at hundreds of fires, receiving serious injuries on more than one occasion. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, in November, 1850. He came to this country in 1872, settling at Marquette, Mich., arriving at Winnipeg in 1874, and was connected with a local newspaper in different capacities some years. Several months after his arrival at Winnipeg a fire company was organized, of which he was the first captain, and when the paid department was organized, in 1882, he continued in that position, and in a few years he was made chief of the department. He has held the position of assistant chief since 1904.
