Important Changes at Boston Commissioner Grady on May 28 sent 14 members of the uniformed force who were on detail duty with the fire alarm and repair shop bureaus, back to their companies and announced that there will be no more “soft job” details and that men paid $1,400 salaries as firemen will not perform eight hours work or working days for which other men are paid $3 per day. This order and announcement meets with universal approval in the rank and file of the department as it abolishes what they regard as one of the worst evils the department has had to contend with for many years, and will keep company membership nearer its full strength than has been the custom.
