New Chief at Birmingham

New Chief at Birmingham Assistant Chief Middleton on August 1, succeeded A. V. Bennett as chief of the Birmingham, Ala., fire department. Chief Bennett resigned that position to accept one with the Birmingham Water Works Company. On his recommendation Assistant Chief Sidney A. Middleton was selected as his successor. Chief Bennett’s resignation was expected. He announced last November that he would soon resign. He has been a member of the department 23 years and its chief eight years. Chief Middleton entered the department Jan. 1, 1898, and he was always connected with Hose Company No. 1, and was made its captain March 1. 1902. He was promoted to second assistant Chief, a new position, June 1, 1914. W. P. Walter will continue as first assistant chief.
