REPORT ON CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT The National Board of Fire Underwriters have just made a supplementary report on the fire department of Chicago, which in part is as follows: The department is under the control of the chief of the department, who is directly responsible to the mayor. The chief is appointed by the mayor with the confirmation of the city council for the mayor’s term of four years; he may be removed at any time. The city is divided into 25 battalions. Five new battalions and one division have been added since the previous report. Chief Thomas O’Connor, age 51, has been a member of the department for 28 years and has risen by regular promotion from the ranks; he was made battalion chief in 1900 and assistant fire marshal in 1907.
