Fireman Killed at Duty in St Louis Charles Lowe, a member of Truck Company No. 3, of the St. Louis, Mo., fire department, was almost instantly killed, August 5, when he fell from a ladder, while directing a stream from a truck at a fire which swept the five story building at the southeast corner of Eighth and St. Charles streets. Lowe was working in a thick swirl of smoke. The smoke enveloped every object within a radius of a block, hanging close to the ground and reaching to a height of 109 feet. Lowe’s neck was broken. Two trucks were placed in position on St. Charles street and lines run up to fight the flames from this point. On one of these, nearest Eighth street.
