Fire Alarm System at Constantinople The fire alarm system at Constantinople. Turkey, at present is a curious mixture of the old and the new. The ancient system is still in operation. There are two high towers, one the Seraskerat tower, the other Galata tower, which betwen them overlook the whole city. On the tops of these towers watchmen arc constantly on duty. On discerning a fire, a flag is hung out by day and lanterns by night. At the foot of the towers swift runners are waiting. The watchman calls down to the runners the name of the section of the city in which is the fire, and they immediately set off in all directions to spread the news.
