Virginia State Firemen Hold TwentyEighth Annual Convention The twenty-eighth annual convention and parade of the Virginia State Firemen’s Association was held at Portsmouth August 26-27. It was one of the best and largest conventions in the history of the association. Thousands of people saw the parade. The Hampton company won the first best appearance prize and the Charlottesville company the second. George G. Gumming, of Portsmouth, for a number of years secretary of the association, read a paper, his subject being “Is the Automobile so Far a Success and Is the Faithful Old Horse to Be Replaced by the Motor.” He read reports of the many exhaustive tests made in various cities with tractor engines and also with gasoline propelled and operated engines.
