Fire in Hat Manufactory in Jersey City Fire of unknown origin damaged the building of the Modern Hat Company, in Jersey City, N. J., on December 5, and although newspaper reports gave the loss at over $50,000 it was only $5,000, this being due to the good work of the firemen under Chief Engineer J. J. Conway. The fire was discovered at 4 A. M. by a policeman, who immediately sent in an alarm which was later followed by two more. Just as the firemen arrived an explosion occurred, apparently from dyes and chemicals used for cleaning, spreading the Haines throughout the interior of the building. The structure, which occupied a space of 25 by 100 feet, was of frame construction with brick and wood walls.
