NEW YORK FIREMEN RESCUE HUNDREDS IN SUBWAY FIRE. The New York Fire Department did heroic work on Wednesday of last week when the subway was blocked and fire, caused, it is understood by a short circuit, filled the tube in the section between Fiftieth and Fifty-ninth Streets _____ith dense smoke and hundreds of people trapped in a stalled train were overcome by it. Seven hundred people, it was estimated, were more or less overcome by smoke and fumes and all were unable to reach safety until rescued by firemen. Gratings over the ventilating boxes were lifted, and ladders were lowered and firemen released the imprisoned passengers, carrying them to the street. Something like two hundred of the passengers were sent to the hospitals. The gallant work of the Fire Department was praised by the New York newspapers and the public and it was regarded that the action of the firemen…
