Montreal Church Gutted With the thermometer registering below zero fire swept through the West End Methodist Church in Montreal, Canada, on December 25. The roof fell in and the water from the hose froze and what was left of the interior of the church was encased in ice. The damage was estimated at $45,000. The fire occurred in the morning, from an unknown cause. People in the neighborhood discovered the fire and telephoned to the pastor who turned in an alarm. District Chiefs Favreau and Briere responded with firemen of the Western District divisions. A second alarm was sent in which brought portions of the Eastern and Western divisions under Chief Tremblay. The firemen had just come from another fire and their wet boots and rubber coats were soon encrusted with ice. They worked hard but were unable to save the building.
