EFFICIENT WORK BY NEW YORK RESCUE COMPANY WITH SMOKE HELMETS. On three occasions in New York City within the past week the efficiency of the Rescue Company of the New York Fire Department, equipped with smoke helmets, was demonstrated. One instance was when explosions occurred at the plant of the Manhattan Refrigerating Company, injuring a dozen men. In referring to this a New York newspaper said; “Resuce Company No. 1 bore the brunt of the task of removing the injured from the wreckage, and it is likely that without their aid some of the victims might have died from the deadly fumes. Equipped with oxygen helmets, the rescuers entered the building and carried out those who were unable to stand.” Several men were engaged in making some repairs on four tanks which supply aqua ammonia to the markets in the neighborhood when a two-inch connection burst, allowing 250 gallons of…
