VALUE OF FIRE DRILLS IN SCHOOLS AGAIN EXEMPLIFIED. The instances in which the value of the fire drill in schools is shown are frequent. The latest instance was when fire occurred, last week, in St. Gabriel’s parochial school in East 36th Street, New York City. The fifteen hundred children were at their studies when the fire drill signal was sounded. Under the guidance of thirtytwo teachers the children were all safely in the street in two minutes, by way of fireproof separated stairways at end of the building. Not until they were outside and heard the approaching engines and trucks did the children and teachers know that there was a fire in the school. They had supposed that the drill was an emergency tost, such as is given occasionally by Brother Baldwin, the principal, in addition to the usual weekly fire drill.
