FIRE DEPARTMENT DOINGS Chief Letford, of Rochester, Minn., has resigned. Woodbury, N. J., plans to establish a drill school next month. Baltimore recently received 454 applications for the position of fireman. Chief F. A. Newell, of New Smyrna, Fla., has tendered his resignation. Fireman R. N. Ickes, of Station 6, Altoona, P;c, has patented a new fire extinguisher. The firemen of Petersburg, Va., have petitioned the Fire Commissioners for a salary increase. The Camden County (N. J.) Fire Association, comprising 21 of the 27 volunteer fire companies of the county, met at Collingswood, August 30. District Chief John W. Murphy, of Boston, has retired after thirty years of service in the fire department. He is 55 years of age and will receive a pension of $1,500 a year.
