Smith Appointed Chief at Toronto The City Council of Toronto, Canada, in special session, has appointed William J. Smith as chief of the fire department. Chief Smith has been acting chief. A confirming by-law was passed. The salary is $4,500 per year. Chief Smith’s career in the department has been a notable one. He entered the service in 1876, when but 19 years of age, and at a time when the department was made up of about 60 men, distributed among six stations. He was attached to the hook and ladder section at Court street station. In 1888 he was appointed foreman at lower Dundas street hose station, and two years later was transferred to Wilton avenue hose station.
