Water Rates in Philadelphia At a hearing before a Joint Committee of Councils in Philadelphia, Pa., to investigate the advisability of an adjustment of meter and fixture rates it was pointed out that the city is selling filtered water to its consumers at less than the cost of production. The meter rates is 4 cents per 1,000 gallons, and Chief Davis, of the Bureau of Water, said it costs 8 cents per 1,000 gallons to produce the filtered water. The concensus of opinion was that the direct solution of the problem is to set meters universally throughout the city, adopt a sliding scale of rates and take additional precautions against waste. No change in rates can be made to go into effect before 1917.
