Loss at Murphysboro Lowest in Years. During the fiscal year ending May 11, the fire loss at Murphysboro, Ill., was the smallest in years. The loss was but $10,005.04 and the property and contents at risk was valued at $87,200. This loss applies to property within the city limits and not to fires in the county. The cost of the fire department for the year was $3,790,77, there being a balance of $1,209.23 out of a $5,000 appropriation. This is a new expense mark for the department which cost less for maintenance last year than for many years and this is ascribed largely to the business ability of Fire Commissioner D. Anderson and the excellent co-operation of Chief Albert Herring and the men under him. Chief Herring5s report states there were 59 fires during the year. Sixty three alarms were answered.
