Pensions for Washington Firemen. Legislation to place firemen’s and police pensions systems in Washington, D. C., in a more up-to-date basis is being considered by the House District Committee and in this connection statistics relative to pensions in many cities have been filed with that committee. Under existing law the payments in the District of Columbia average from 33 ½ to 50 per cent. of the salaries received at the time of retirement. What the firemen want is an arrangement that will insure a uniform 50 per cent, payment. The Cary bill, now under consideration by the committee, slightly increases this amount. It is anticipated that if the measure is altered in any way the amount of pension to be authorized will not be less than 50 oer cent, of the amount of salary received.
