Hobart Department Fights Serious Fire A fire recently resulted in the partial destruction of the Sheffield By-Products plant, located near Hobart, N. Y. Chief A. L. O’Connor and sixty firemen and one hand engine were at the fire. Half of the roof was ablaze when the department arrived. The firemen worked excellently under Chief O’Connor’s leadership, however, and succeeded in saving almost half of the building from destruction. The loss on the building amounted to $35,000, while its value was about $60,000. The loss on its contents, valued at $25,000, was total. The contents consisted of office furniture, machinery for making milk sugar, two large boilers, etc. One-quarter acre of space was occupied by the plant, and the building was three stories high. It was built of concrete, with wooden partition walls, ten years ago, and contained fire escapes. About 1,500 feet of cotton rubber-lined hose was in use. in…
