The Explosions and Fire at the Black Tom Pier On this page appears an illustration giving a view of the Black Tom pier and vicinity near Communipaw, Jersey City, N. J., after the explosion Sunday morning, July 30, the explosions and the fire resulting in damage estimated at over $10,000,000. In the background of the picture is seen the burned area and in the foreground are freight sheds which sustained damage from the force of the explosion but were not burned, demonstrating the successful efforts of the firemen restricting the fire area. Chief Boyle and the Jersey City department were promptly on the scene and the Jersey authorities were given assistance by the New York fire department fireboats going to the rescue of endangered vessels.
