WHAT NEW YORK IS DOING IN FIRE PREVENTION Up to four years ago our Fire Department was only a fire department. Now it is also a safety department. To-day prevention of fires and the structural safeguarding of buildings is one of the principal functions of the Fire Department. Large powers in this respect were given to the Fire Department under the fire prevention law four years ago, and as late as October 1, last, these powers were tremesdously increased when full power for the protection of the city’s 800,000 factory workers was transferred to this department. So that to-day the functions of our Fire Department are twofold: First, the extinguishing of fires, and second,the safeguarding of factories, stores, theatres, hospitals, schools, asylums, and business structures against fire dangers and the regulation and supervision of the handling, use and transportation of all explosives and combustibles.
