Standard Hose Couplings for Indiana

Issue 9 and Volume 61.

Standard Hose Couplings for Indiana State Fire Marshal William Longley, of Indiana, is to ask the Legislature to enact a bill that all fire hose fittings and couplings in the State will be of a standard size, so that one city department may assist another in case of fire. There is such a wide variance of coupling construction and size at present that it it practically useless, in case of serious fire, for one city to render aid to another, declared the fire marshal. A concrete instance is cited at Newcastle, where a block was destroyed and appeals for aid were sent to Muncie. Although the fire was under control when the Muncie apparatus arrived, it would have been unable to give any assistance because of the difference in the size of hose couplings.
