CONGESTED STREETS HAMPER FIREMEN. Runs to fires in those sections of Youngstown, O., where Federal street has to be utilized are impeded by excessive traffic on that street, says Chief Joseph Wallace, and the situation is a serious one, because the department apparatus must use that street on practically all alarms in the business district. Motor car traffic from side streets in Federal street and from Federal into side streets is heavy. Often it has been necessary for the fire department to slow down and in some instances halt the apparatus to avoid accidents and collisions. Little success has been experienced in efforts to secure prosecution of persons interfering with the progress of the apparatus, and it also has been almost impossible, fire department officers say, to secure conviction if the person interfering makes a fight.
