The report of the National Board of Fire Underwriters on the condition of the fire department of Los Angeles, Cal., is favorable and shows that city to be admirably protected from fire. The population of the city, as estimated by the Chamber of Commerce, is 575,000, including the latest annexations. The rapid growth of the city, started by the development of the nearby oil fields, has been continued and accelerated by the climate and by the increased importance of the city as the commercial center of Southern California.
