FIRE DEPARTMENT DOINGS Warren B. Gardiner has been appointed chief at Saylesville, R. I. There is discussion relative to a more adequate wage scale for Philadelphia firemen. Fred A. Smith has been selected chief of the Athens, Pa., fire company, known as the Protective Hose Company. C. S. Williams has been elected chief of the Newfield, Pa., fire company, with Irving Paist, assistant chief. Quincy, Ill., has a unionized fire department recently chartered with 42 members. Four permanent firemen and 24 call men have been appointed to the department at New Bedford, Mass. The fire house at Newark, Ohio, is now under process of being remodeled, and a new steam heating plant is being installed.
