Firemen of Cedar Rapids Win in Contention for Higher Wages Concerted pressure brought to bear by the city fire department, W. A. Mohrbacher, chief, and Federation of Labor of Cedar Rapids, Ia., resulted recently in a revision of the proposed wage scale which grants a further increase for fire departments. The city council met in special session to listen to a representative committee of the labor organization, and acted in accordance with their proposition. The council had previously posted bulletins on the blackboards of the departments promising an increase in salary which did not meet with approval. Under the new wage scale ordinary firemen of first rank will receive $95 a month compared with $80 which they have been getting. The clothes allowance which has been granted annually to the departments will be abolished, however, and the department members will be required to furnish not only their dress but working…
