Back Firing of Auto Truck Causes Bad Fire in East Cambridge Chief James M. Casey had a difficult fire to handle recently when the establishment of the Alden Speares’ Sons Company, in East Cambridge, Mass., and containing barrels filled with oil, was damaged by flames. The fire is attributed to the backfiring of an auto truck outside the buildings. The chauffeur, who discovered the flames, sent in an alarm from a private fire alarm box at 11:59 a. m. The plant consisted of buildings constructed of wood covered with sheet iron and the fire spread rapidly, so that Chief Casey on his arrival found the buildings on both sides of the auto all on fire. Chief Casey had 77 firemen, five Amoskeag steam engines, one Ahrens-Fox steam engine, two American-La France motor pumping engines, one Champion chemical car. two city service ladder trucks and one Hayes truck in service, and…
