Pay Department of Newport, Ky., Fifty Years Old This Month The pay fire department of Newport, Ky., celebrated its fiftieth anniversary on June 1, and the following are extracts from a history of this organization written by George Hornung, 78 years of age, who was one of the original members of the department: Preceding the establishment of the pay department, the city entrusted its protection against fires to a volunteer fire company, organized in 1857. The outfit of this company consisted of two four-wheeled brake-operated hand pump machines, and two fourwheeled hose carriages, with accompaniment of leather hose. When responding to a call of fire, given by continuous clanking of a bell mounted on the then fire-house, the members would gather there to pull the apparatus over the streets to the locality where needed by means of drag ropes attached to the machines.
