WATER RATES Water Engineer Walter E. Lee has asked the Law Department of the city of Baltimore. Md., to oppose the increase in rates asked by the Baltimore County Water Company, so far as the city’s rescantly annexed territory is concerned. The Maine Public Utilities Commission has ordered that the operation of the increased hydrant rates by the Lincoln, the Island Falls and the Washburn water companies, respectively, shall be suspended for a period of three months following Sept. 1, 1918, unless otherwise ordered by the commission. The Richmond, Ind., water works has filed a petition with the Indiana Public Service Commission, asking for permission to add a ten per cent surcharge on all customers’ bills. The Water Works Company alleges that the heavy increase in operating expenses makes additional revenue absolutely necessary, if adequate service is to be maintained. It is expected the Peoria (Ill.)
