FIRE DEPARTMENT DOINGS About 125 members of the department in Birmingham, Ala., have formed a local branch of the International Association of Fire Fighters. The city commissioner of Yakima, Wash., has raised the firemen’s salaries as a compromise on their demand for a two-platoon system. The city of Winnipeg, Man., is contemplating closing some of its fire stations in order to reduce the running expenses for the year by about $50,000. Chief Buchanan declares that it will be impossible to maintain the department’s efficiency if any reduction takes place. A new and well-equipped fire station has been provided in Drumright, Okla., in a section that has not been well protected in the past. The establishment of an additional station will bring about a reduction of fire insurance rates, it is believed, as there will be three men constantly on duty.
