Using the Engine as a Brake It is a very good practice for the driver of a motor apparatus, when about to descend a long hill, or steep grade, to put the gears into low or second speed, even if it is not his intention to use the engine as a brake. For one thing it gives the operator a comfortable sense of control and security. But aside from this, it is a very good plan to brake with the engine occasionally, as it will result in saving just so far the wear and tear on the brakes.
