FIRE DEPARTMENT DOINGS From reports covering the United States and Canada the estimated losses by fire during the week ended March 29, 1919, aggregated $5,292,300, as compared with $2,979,000 for the corresponding week in 1918. The city of Guelph, Ont., has installed the two-platoon system, which will require seven extra men. An inventory of fire equipment that will soon be released from army cantonments is reported to be nearly ready and municipalities are to get the first chance to buy, it is said. The Niagara I lose Company, of Burlington, N. J., recently gave its new electric siren its initial test. The company decided that the new alarm will awaken any fireman within five miles.
