The Volunteers Heard from In the March 19 issue of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING was published a letter from Charles Cobeck, of the East St. Louis fire department, in which the writer waxed rather severe in his strictures on the volunteer firemen, even going so far as to suggest the feasibility and desirability of legislating this class of fire fighters out of existence. We published this letter in its entirety with the expectation that some one would rally to the defense of the attacked, and in this hope we were not disappointed. In our correspondence column of this issue is printed the retort courteous of Chief F. E. Soule, of the volunteer fire department of Coatesville, Pa., in which he replies at some length to the charges of the East St. Louis member.
