FIRE DEPARTMENT DOINGS From reports covering the United States and Canada the estimated losses by fire during the week ended May 31, 1919, aggregated $2,689,850, as compared with $4,156,000 for the corresponding week in 1918. The Boston Fire Department drill school now has forty men in training under Captain Maloney. It is estimated that it would cost Boston, Mass., $500,000 more to have a two-platoon system. Mayor Peters asks Gov. Coolidgc to veto the bill now before the Legislature calling for its installation. There are two factors in connection with the present serious labor troubles and strikes in Winnipeg that are causing fire underwriters some concern. One is the report that water pressure in the city is insufficient to cope with a fire of any considerable size. The other is that the storage of gasoline is rapidly being reduced to a minimum.
