Department in Need of Pumping Apparatus The fire department of Greenville, S. C., of which J. G. Scott is chief, feels more than ever its need of efficient apparatus, since the recent fire that destroyed one of the business buildings of the city and damaged others. The fire started from unknown cause in the rear of the brick and galvanized structure on the corner of Rhett and Pendleton streets, at 10:45 p.m., and an alarm was telephoned, which brought the department, headed by Chief Scott, in quick time. They found the entire building involved and the strong wind prevailing endangered the adjacent houses, especially as the burning building was connected by a long wooden shed with brick structures on Pendleton street. The twenty men engaged had no steamer nor motor engine and were wholly dependent on motor hose wagons, which lack proved a serious hindrance to anything like effective handling…
