Lack of Protection in Vertical Openings Causes Heavy Loss “A case of open elevator shafts and stairways-ordered to enclose and contracts had been let but the strike stopped all such work. Proper protection to vertical openings would have saved 90% of the loss,” reports Fire Marshal Harry W. Bringhurst of Seattle, Wash. in his account of the fire that recently caused a heavy loss in that city to the owners of the Whiton Hardware store, in the wholesale business district. The plant comprised a main building of five stories and two others four stories each, all of brick construction, with wooden joints and frame partition walls and were 18 and 28 years old, on an 80 foot street.
