Chief Mealey in Active Service at Eighty

Issue 5 and Volume 67.

Chief Mealey in Active Service at Eighty FIRE DEPARTMENT DOINGS The chief of the fire department of Gloucester, Pa., is Patrick Mealey, who is probably the oldest chief in the country, being now eighty and still in active service. During the recent bad weather, fearing that a fire might start that would need special attention owing to the high wind prevailing, he remained late at the fire station. and when leaving after midnight he slipped as he reached the bottom of the pole leading from the second to the first floor and broke his ankle. Chief Mealey evidently has adopted the good old motto that “It is better to wear out than to rust out.”
