Winter Troubles in Springfield, Mass. The difficulties that beset firemen in their winter work are strikingly shown in the accompanying illustration from a photograph taken by L. Hollingsworth of the Springfield fire department, to whose courtesy we are indebted for the picture, at the fire which recently destroyed the Steere Organ Factory. The alarm was pulled at 12:50 A. M., and was all out at noon. The picture shows Hose No. 2 after the turret pipe had been in action six hours. In addition to the turret pipe, a Deluge set with 2-inch tip was used, and ten 2 1/2-inch lines played on nearly all sides of the structure. The loss on the property and contents amounted to nearly $100,000.
