Four Hundred Thousand Loss in Two Atlanta Fires Christmas Eve Sees Two Very Bad Fires in Southern City—$500,000 Hardwood Fire on Staten Island—Unusually Heavy Week’s Fire Record Two Christmas Fires at Atlanta The historical Kimball House, at Atlanta, Ga., one of the famous hotels of the South, came near being destroyed on the morning of December 24th. Thirty minutes after the flames were discovered Chief Cody ordered all the guests to leave the building, and over two hundred guests stood shivering in the cold for nearly two hours, watching the firemen battling with the flames. The entire fire-fighting force of Atlanta was called out. A high wind was blowing at the time. The following stores on the Peachtree Street side were completely destroyed: The United Cigar Stores Co., May Bros.’ Jewelry Co., Adler’s Clothing Store, and Ware Shoe Co.
