The Strength of Companies on Platoon Shifts What the Complement of Men Should Be for Best Service — The Minimum Number for Efficient Work—Companies Crippled by Being Undermanned THIS subject was assigned to me by the executive committee of the Pacific Coast Association of Fire Chiefs, and I shall take it to mean the number of men on a shift that efficient service requires; not what so many of our fire departments have to get along with. If we are to have quick and satisfactory work by our fire apparatus, the number of men handling it must be kept up to something like a standard. Our men average much the same in all departments, and therefore it takes just about as many to get a line of hose on a fire in one place as in another.
