Hoboken Ship Oil Fires The fifth oil fire on a steamer at the piers in Hoboken, N. J., to take place within the last three months broke out recently on board the Invincible, a shipping board vessel lying at Pier No. 2. While, according to Chief Gilday of the department, the blaze was not a serious one as far as actual damage was concerned, it proved to be a hard fire to handle, owing to the difficulty of getting to the seat of the fire. The men were compelled to go into the depths of the vessel and take grave risks. This particular fire broke out in the rubbish and oil in the engine room and the dense smoke and heavy fumes made the men’s task still harder. None of the members of the department was overcome.
