WILL REPORT ON FIRST AID FIRE APPLIANCES The committee on field practice of the National Fire Protection Association, of which Edward R. Hardy of the New York Fire Insurance Exchange is chairman, is to present to the meeting of the association in San Francisco this month suggested regulations for the installation, maintenance and use of first aid fire appliances. On the theory that a small quantity of water or other extinguishing agent used intelligently at the start of a fire may easily be more effective than the work of an entire fire department five minutes later, the committee has worked out a classification of hand fire extinguishers and defines their suitability for various situations. These regulations if adopted will be of especial service in harmonizing the practice of the inspection bureaus throughout the country whose requirements for these protective appliances have not always been uniform for similar situations.
