Former New York Fire Commissioner Dies Roswell D. Hatch, a former fire commissioner of New York City, passed away on June 7 in Greenwich, Conn. Mr. Hatch was appointed fire commissioner by Mayor Havemeyer in 1873 and served to 1877. This was during the formation of the paid fire department of the city and upon Mr Hatch fell a great deal of the work of organizing that department. Mr. Hatch was one of the oldest members of the New York Bar Association and was one of the original committee of seventy, which was organized in 1871 and which fought and broke the grip of the Tweed ing of Now York City. Mr. Hatch was born in New York and was educated in the public schools, afterwards studying law in the office of Barbour and Cowles.
