Good Report on Philadelphia Fire Department The committee on Fire Prevention and Engineering Standards of the National Hoard of Fire Underwriters has issued a report on the city of Philadelphia, in which in referring to the fire department it says in part: “The fire department is a well-organized force under suitable supervision and commanded by competent and experienced chief officers. The methods of appointment and promotion are governed by adequate civil service rules; the effects of political interference have largely disappeared. Pension and retirement provisions are mainly adequate although no age limit is set for compulsory retirement, and several members arc of an age and physical condition meriting retirement. Many of the districts are excessive in size and number of companies; and insufficient battalion chiefs are provided, necessitating the acting of a company officer in that capacity.
