THE FIRE CHIEF SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT OF POLITICS Head of Fire Department Should Not Be Subject to Political Influence—There Can Be No Efficiency Where Such Conditions Exist IN the following article Mr. Mielielsen points the way to remedy what is becoming a very serious problem in the administration of the affairs of the fire department. The tenure of office for the chief should be absolutely sure and there should be no question of his removal from office except for ineompetency, disability or malfeasance in office. Unless this is accomplished the American fire department cannot expect to maintain its high position among the fire fighting forces of the world. If the office of chief is to be made the football of political bosses or parlies, the degeneration of the fire department will inevitably result.
