Former Newark Battalion Chief Dies Former Battalion Chief George Bauer, who served for twenty-seven years as a member of the Newark, N. J., fire department, died of pneumonia at his home on September 7. He was retired in 1921 because of ill health. Mr. Bauer was born in Newark on August 10, 1870, and had lived in that city all his life. He was appointed to the fire department January 16, 1896 and on July 1, 1905, was promoted to lieutenant. He became captain in August, 1908, and on June 1, 1918, was appointed battalion chief, which post he held until his retirement on March 1, 1921, Chief Bauer had a clean record in the department as no charges had ever been made against him.
