Mental Development of the Fireman Much more attention is being paid today than ever before to the quarters of the firemen. There are many elements which have entered into this improvement in the fire stations and their equipment. One of the most important of these is the general recognition that not only must the fire fighter be mentally and physically fit when he is admitted to the service, but also that he must be kept constantly in that condition without the slightest letting down in his efficiency. To accomplish this not only must he have plenty of opportunity to exercise his muscles and keep them properly up to the mark, but also his mental attitude must be one of serenity. He must feel that his surroundings are pleasant and congenial—there must not be a jarring note that will produce in his mind the feeling of dissatisfaction and result in frayed…
